Women's College Hockey

Women's College Hockey is a fast-growing ice hockey competition that has been growing in popularity over the last decade. Across North America, teams of different levels compete in a variety of leagues, including the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) and the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Women's College Hockey teams are composed of student athletes who are enrolled in full-time studies. The primary season format for Women's College Hockey is typically similar to that of the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey. Teams compete in a conference schedule with different rankings determining seeding for playoffs. Once the regular season is completed, teams compete in conference and national playoffs to determine the Champions of the season. The most successful sports teams in Women's College Hockey come from the NCAA Division I and the CIS. Teams from the NCAA Division I are the University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota, Clarkson University, Northeastern University, Boston College, Wisconsin-Duluth, Boston University, St. Lawrence University and the University of North Dakota, among others. Teams from the CIS are the Montreal Carabins, McGill Martlets, Alberta Pandas, Saskatchewan Huskies, and St. Francis Xavier X-Women. Reigning NCAA Women's Ice Hockey Champions are the Wisconsin Badgers, who are also the reigning women's Beanpot tournament champions. Popular players from the NCAA Women's Ice Hockey league include Maddie Rooney, Shannon Szabados, Sarah Nurse, and Annie Pankowski. Throughout the Women's College Hockey, NCAA Division I teams have been dominant, however, Canadian teams have had their fair share of success. Montreal Carabins are the reigning Canadian Champion and have four National titles and nine National semifinals appearances, while the McGill Martlets have three National titles and 10 semi-final appearances. Women's College Hockey is continuing to grow, with players such as Shannon Szabados, Hilary Knight, and Laura Stacey gaining exposure for the sport through their involvement in international tournaments such as the Canada Women's Hockey League, the National Hockey League, and the Winter Olympics. Women's College Hockey has become a popular sport for many hockey fans and is likely to be popular for years to come.
