Celebrated chefs mentor amateur cooks in an attempt to transform them from rookies to kitchen experts. Twelve to 16 contestants (referred to as "recruits") with very poor cooking skills are put through a culinary boot camp to earn a cash prize of $25,000 and a Food Network cooking set. The recruits are trained on the various basic cooking techniques, including baking, knife skills, temperature, seasoning and preparation. The final challenge is to cook a restaurant-quality, three-course meal for three food critics.

The recruits compete in a scavenger hunt race for ingredients before chefs Jeff Mauro and Antonia Lofaso challenge them to dive into making squid ink seafood pasta; the two bottom recruits must make fresh pasta and sauce in a blind challenge.

Anne Burrell and Tiffany Derry challenge the recruits to throw a fabulous soiree with appetizers and a signature cocktail to impress the VIP chefs; to finish off this celebration, the cooks take on baking and decorating beautiful layer cakes.

For the final showdown, chefs Jeff Mauro and Antonia Lofaso guide the recruits in preparing a three-course restaurant-quality meal; judges Gino D'Acampo, Judy Joo and Kelsey Barnard Clark blind-taste the dishes to crown the winner.

Anne Burrell and Tiffany Derry's final recruits go head-to-head to create a three-course, restaurant quality meal; after hitting a surprise twist, judges Matt Abdoo, Andrienne Cheatham and Michael Jenkins determine the winner of the $25,000 prize.

Jeff Mauro and Antonia Lofaso teach the recruits to craft their own version of a hero sandwich; in the main dish challenge, the teams venture into Mexican cuisine with flavorful enchiladas; the bottom two recruits face off in a taco showdown.

Anne Burrell and Tiffany Derry teach their spoiled recruits that food doesn't come from an app as they navigate an outrageous farm-themed obstacle course; the teams replicate biscuits and gravy before creating an entire composed dish on their own.
